U-235 / U-238 separation @ Oak Ridge, TN. As copper was already scarce in 1943, tons and tons of silver wire were used for the magnet coils instead. Then they ran out of lead and borrowed gold from Fort Knox to bridge the shortage (which anyway is more effective for shielding radiation than lead). Research can be so efficient with unlimited funding...
